As promised, the iPhone Dev Team released their "backup plan," a beta of redsn0w (Mac only at the moment) bringing an untethered jailbreak to iPhone 4s, iPod touch 4Gs, and iPads running iOS 4.2.1 before Christmas. It requires you to have SHSH blobs saved for iOS 4.2b3 and access to the ISPW for it, which only devs are supposed to have. If you have a copy of the 4.2b3 firmware, then follow this guide on Redmond Pie to enjoy your untethered jailbreak.
